Why your reports genuinely matter

Every correction you send us has a direct, immediate effect on the people who visit the map next. When you tell us that the wheelchair-accessible toilet on a particular high street is actually locked behind a paid membership, that costs you two minutes but potentially saves a wheelchair user two hours of failed attempts to find an alternative.

We receive around 40–60 data corrections per week from users across the world. More than half of those come from people who relied on our data, found it was wrong, and took the time to fix it rather than just move on frustrated. That small act of civic-mindedness is genuinely what keeps the map accurate - no automated system can match it.

The same applies to adding entirely new entries. Thousands of public toilets exist that are simply not yet in OpenStreetMap - unlisted park facilities, newer shopping centre WCs, recently opened automated toilet units, and temporary facilities at seasonal venues. If you know of one that is missing, adding it here takes under two minutes and it will appear on the map within 24 hours.

What makes a good data report

Include the exact location

A postcode, map link, or street address tells us exactly which facility you mean. 'The one near the park' covers several dozen possibilities in most towns.

Tell us what you saw vs. what we show

If we show a toilet as free but you were charged 30p, say that. If we show it as wheelchair accessible but the door is too narrow, give the approximate width if you can.

Note the date you visited

Facilities change. Knowing the visit date helps us judge whether this is a recent change, a seasonal closure, or a long-standing error.

Provide a source if you have one

A council website, a posted notice on the door, or a business Facebook update all help us verify the information and update the record with confidence.

Common questions

How do I report a toilet that shows wrong opening hours?

Use the contact form and select 'Incorrect toilet data' - include the toilet name or map link and what the correct hours should be. If you know the source of the correct data (council website, posted sign), include that too. Updates are usually published within 24 hours.

Can I add a toilet that is missing from the map?

Yes. Click 'Add a Toilet' in the navigation bar. You can submit a new location with its address, accessibility details, and opening hours. Each submission is reviewed before publishing and typically appears within 24–48 hours.

Do you offer an API for building apps?

Yes. Our REST API provides toilet locations by latitude/longitude and radius. The open tier allows 10 requests per minute with no key. For higher limits, apply for a developer key through the API documentation page.

Can ToiletNearest.com data be used in academic research?

Yes. The underlying OpenStreetMap data is freely available under ODbL. For research papers citing ToiletNearest.com specifically, please email us so we can provide accurate data export timestamps and source documentation.

I run a local council / public authority - can we contribute our toilet data?

Absolutely. We support bulk data ingestion from government open data portals. If your authority publishes toilet data under an open licence, email hello@toiletnearest.com with a link to the dataset and we will include it in the next data refresh.

Is there a public-facing status page for the API?

We are building one. For now, if you are experiencing API issues, check our Twitter/X account for announcements or email developer@toiletnearest.com.
